Sietse van Erve - Stones

about

The story behind my performance:

As Geology student I collected rocks,
fossils and whatever else. After my
studies a lot of them ended up in
boxes in my attic. For this performance
I took them from the attic and recorded
various different sounds.

There are stones grinding over each other,
stones ticking against each other, over
100 stones lying on a pile with carefully
moving the stones around and take one
by one out and more.

The recordings I made were used to create
this piece where I used no computer
effects (except an EQ) but only an absurd
amount of multi-layering. Some of the
sounds you hear are the result of layering
a part of the recording over 10 miljoen
times shifting the starting point with
milliseconds each time. This way I was
able to create unearthly sounds and
drones from the stones. While on the
other side there are also untreated recordings
in it where you can hear me
breathing and the cats walking through
my house while the stones are ticking,
clicking and clacking and the pebbles
grinding.

Where a collected box of stones isn’t
good for...For sure a good sound source
for more future recordings.

Thanks goes out to Seamus Cater and
DNK-Amsterdam for the microphones
and Sylvain van iniitu for making me familiar
with this composition by Christian
Wolff.
